This is Tim Burton's Batmobile, the long, ribbed, jet-turbine monster from 1992's Batman Returns, rendered as an adult display model for the first time. It lands on 4 September 2026 at £189.99 with 2,269 pieces, with LEGO Insiders getting early access from 1 September.

The headline is the transformation. Press a button and the car's side panels release to reveal the Batmissile hidden inside, which LEGO says is a first for a LEGO Batmobile. You can display it either way, and that turns out to be a more interesting decision than it sounds.

First impressions

The car

Burton's Batmobile is one of the easier hero vehicles to recognise and one of the harder ones to build. It is essentially a long, low tube with a bubble canopy at one end and a jet turbine at the other, and almost all of its character lives in curves that LEGO bricks do not naturally want to make.

From the images, the design team has gone at it with heavy sculpted panelling along the flanks, which is where the shape has to come from. LEGO calls out the elongated bodywork, the jet turbine rear engine, the opening canopy and a detailed cockpit. There are also six hidden Easter eggs worked into the model, including what LEGO describes as The Penguin's tracking device.

What we would say from the pictures alone is that the proportions look right, and on this car proportions are the whole job. Get the nose too short or the turbine too small and it stops being the 1992 Batmobile and starts being a generic black wedge.

The Batmissile transformation

This is the part that makes 76355 more than another black car on a shelf. Press a button and an internal lift-arm mechanism releases the side panels, and what is left is the Batmissile - the narrow single-track escape vehicle from the film.

It is a genuinely clever thing to build into a display model, and it is the sort of engineering LEGO has been getting steadily better at in the 18+ range. It also means this is a set people will pick up and play with, which matters more than it sounds when we get to the display section.

The minifigure and the new moulds

You get one minifigure, an exclusive Batman with a newly moulded cowl and a new cape made specifically for this set, displayed on a dedicated stand carrying the Batman Returns logo. LEGO developed three new elements for 76355 in total.

One minifigure in a set at this price will disappoint some people, and it is a fair gripe - Burton's Gotham is not short of characters worth moulding. Our take is that it is the right call for a display model. This is a vehicle piece, not a diorama, and a row of minifigures parked alongside it would pull the eye away from the only thing you actually want people looking at.

For context, the 1989 Batmobile (76139) launched at £219.99 for 3,306 pieces, or around 6.7p per piece, so 76355 is the more expensive set brick for brick despite the lower sticker price. That is the licence and the new moulds being paid for, and it is not out of line with the rest of the best LEGO sets for adults shelf.

The 1992 Batmobile, and why the Batmissile matters

If you have come to this from the LEGO side rather than the film side, the short version is that this car has a slightly unusual history.

The Batmobile was created for Burton's Batman in 1989, designed by conceptual illustrator Julian Caldow under production designer Anton Furst, with the body sculpted by Keith Short over a Chevrolet Impala chassis. When Batman Returns went into production, the surviving cars were brought back and modified by production designer Bo Welch - and the headline modification is exactly the one LEGO has recreated.

In the film, the Batmobile can shed most of its exterior, retract its wheels inward and reduce itself to a narrow, bullet-shaped vehicle capable of squeezing down an alley that would stop the full-width car. That is the Batmissile. It is a wonderfully silly idea executed completely straight, which is Batman Returns in one image.

The other bit of the film LEGO has reached for is The Penguin's takeover. In the film, the Red Triangle Gang sabotages the Batmobile so Oswald Cobblepot can drive it on a remote-controlled rampage through Gotham, framing Batman. LEGO's Easter egg is described as The Penguin's tracking device, which is a slight liberty with the plot, but the reference lands.

For a set aimed squarely at people who were watching this film thirty-odd years ago, picking the transformation as the play feature rather than, say, firing missiles is a smart read of the audience.

Where 76355 sits in the LEGO Batmobile line in 2026

LEGO has built a lot of Batmobiles. Of the LEGO Batman sets 2026 has produced, this is the one with the most direct predecessors to be measured against, so here is how every notable Batmobile LEGO set compares.

One honest note, because we would rather flag it than repeat a line. LEGO's announcement says this is the first time the Batman Returns Batmobile has been recreated in LEGO brick form, and as a standalone large-scale model that is true. But 76252 Batcave - Shadow Box in 2023 was explicitly built around the Batcave from Batman Returns and included a minifigure-scale Batmobile alongside Penguin, Catwoman, Max Shreck and Alfred. So 76355 is the first proper display model of this car rather than the first appearance of it. A small thing, but if you already own the Shadow Box it is worth knowing what you are adding.

What 76355 does have to itself is the transformation. As far as we can find, no previous LEGO Batmobile has done it, and LEGO is presenting it as a first.

How to display the LEGO Batman Returns Batmobile

This is where the specs matter more than they look, and this set has a few characteristics that will catch people out.

It is long. At 45cm it is longer than most people's mental picture of a car model and longer than a lot of shelving will comfortably take once you allow clearance at both ends. It is also only 10cm high, so it will look lost on a tall shelf and needs a run of horizontal space rather than a cube. Measure the shelf before it arrives, not after.

Black is the hardest colour to keep looking good. Gloss and matte black show dust, fingerprints and scuffs more clearly than any other finish, and this model is almost entirely black. A white set can carry a week of dust and still read as white. This one will look grey and tired within a fortnight if it sits open. People will handle it. The transformation is the best thing about 76355, and it is also the thing that means the model gets picked up, pressed, opened and reassembled repeatedly. Every one of those is a chance to leave a mark on a black panel or pop a piece off a flank. The turbine and cockpit are dust traps. An open jet intake at the back and a canopy that lifts to reveal a detailed interior are both places dust settles and brushes cannot easily reach without disturbing bricks.

A few things that will make the difference:

• Measure for 45cm plus clearance. Cube storage is out. This wants a mantelpiece, a long shelf or a cabinet run, viewed from the front and slightly above.
• Case it before you start pressing the button. An acrylic case sized for the set stops the dust and the knocks, and the sooner it goes on, the less handling damage accumulates on those black panels.
• Light it like a black car, not a white one. Front lighting will flatten it into a silhouette. Rim and side lighting picks out the ridges along the bodywork and the shape of the turbine, and a lighter or graduated backdrop stops black-on-black disappearing entirely. Batmobile or Batmissile?

Most sets do not ask you to make a decision before you put them on a shelf. This one does, and we suspect it will be the thing people actually argue about once it is out.

The case for the Batmobile. It is the silhouette everyone recognises. It is the shape that made this car famous, it fills the display space properly, and it is what a visitor will point at. It is also, frankly, the better-looking object.

The case for the Batmissile. It is the reason to own this Batmobile rather than the 1989 one. Displaying the car in its standard form means you have bought a transformation feature and then hidden it. The Batmissile is narrower, stranger and instantly says which film this is from.

Our take: build it, transform it a few times, then display it as the Batmobile and keep the Batmissile as the party trick. The full car is the stronger display piece and the transformation is more fun as something you do than as something you look at.
