For me, as someone who is far more likely to notice a car than a flower pot, dinosaur or massive grey spaceship, there’s already plenty here that has my attention.
The big one is Star Wars, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2027. Rumours include a new Cloud City, Death Star II and an updated Bespin Duel. I’ll wager that Lego will really go to town on this theme - why wouldn’t they? Buyers keep buying, no matter how many variations of the same thing they release!
Then there’s The Lord of the Rings, (I’ve never seen it!) with a rumoured Oliphaunt, and I’ve also read that Dune could get the rather spectacular Sandworm! A giant brick-built worm is not something I ever expected to want on a shelf, but there you go 🤣
Now let’s get to the important stuff. Cars…
I’m not going to pretend I have an ‘unbiased’ opinion here… Give me a good car and I’ll probably ignore everything else in the room.
That makes Speed Champions one of the themes I watch most closely. The 2027 rumours suggest another sizeable F1 presence, with as many as ten new F1 cars rumoured, alongside a Lamborghini Fenomeno.
And this is where I think LEGO has really nailed something. A good Speed Champions model isn’t just a small LEGO car. It needs to look like that particular car. The proportions, lights, wheels, body shape and stupidly tiny details all have to work. When they do, you can recognise the real vehicle almost immediately.
As a proper car freak, that matters to me.
I’d also love LEGO to keep expanding beyond the predictable supercars. There are so many brilliant performance cars, touring cars, rally cars and racing machines that would make fantastic Speed Champions models. Give me something slightly left-field and I’ll be considerably more interested than if it’s just Supercar Number 47. Personally, I’m not into F1, but the investment Lego made into F1 during 2026 was huge! - and probably means they need to drag it out a bit more…
Three Batman sets have now been revealed for January 2027: the Batman Returns Batmobile & Duck, the Arkham Batman Batmobile and a huge Joker comic-cover wall display. Obviously, I’m looking at the Batmobiles.
The Batman Returns Batmobile is one of those movie cars that deserves to be a LEGO set simply because it looks completely bonkers. The Arkham version is a very different beast, and getting an affordable Arkham Knight Batmobile is particularly welcome. Batman has always had some of the best fictional cars around, so LEGO could keep this particular obsession going for quite some time and I wouldn’t complain.
After Batman, there’s Super Mario, which is undergoing what looks like a pretty major change.
LEGO has officially announced that traditional Mario, Luigi, Peach and other minifigures are coming in 2027, with the theme shifting towards character-based play rather than relying entirely on the interactive figures we’ve had since 2020. (Bit of a flop?)
The reported January wave includes Mario’s Pipe Jump, Racing with Mario, Mario’s Beach Adventures, Luigi & Bowser Jr.’s Race, Yoshi at Mario’s House, Bowser’s Rumbling Race and Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle, among others - quite the list!
Beyond all that, the rumour list is getting ridiculous in the best possible way. Pokémon is expected to continue, Hello Kitty is reportedly making her LEGO debut 🤷♂️, Marvel has a stack of sets rumoured, Technic could be getting another BMW Motorbike & LEGO Icons is supposedly adding everything from a Clock Tower to a French Bulldog. (The clock tower is the rumoured new modular)
SO… With Star Wars turning 50, Batman getting more Batmobiles, Mario getting proper mini-figures and cars appearing all over the place, 2027 is looking rather promising for us all don’t you think? And yes, I’m still going to look at the cars first.
Brick on folks…
