LEGO® NASA Artemis Space Launch System Review: To the Moon and Beyond?

Welcome back, space explorers and LEGO® aficionados!

Today, we're venturing into the cosmos with a review of the LEGO® NASA Artemis Space Launch System (SLS).

This set promises to bring the excitement of lunar exploration to your living room.

But does it deliver a stellar experience, or is it more of a misfire?

Let's suit up and find out!

Unboxing the Future of Space Exploration

Upon opening the box, you're greeted by a treasure trove of 3,601 LEGO® pieces.

The instruction manual, filled with fascinating details about the Artemis program, sets the stage for the build ahead.

This isn't a small model, and the finished SLS stands tall, ready for its lunar mission.

However, one thing becomes clear: this set is primarily about the launch tower.

Building the Launch System: A Bit of a Grind

Around 80% of the build focuses on constructing the launch tower.

The base is engaging with interesting techniques, but it's followed by a repetitive process of building the tower's levels. This can feel tedious, especially with the 88 individual pieces used for the fence alone.

The rocket itself doesn't take shape until much later in the build, leaving some builders feeling impatient.

However, as the tower progresses, it becomes increasingly detailed.

The swing arms, boarding platform, and vibrant red piping add visual interest and a touch of realism.

The rocket, once finally assembled, is a sturdy and satisfying creation.

Design and Details: Striking but Not Without Flaws

The completed model is undeniably impressive. Standing at a towering 70 cm (28 inches), the launch tower creates a dramatic backdrop for the SLS rocket.

The attention to detail, particularly in the tower's mechanisms and the rocket's staging, is commendable.

Builders will appreciate the intricate details throughout the model, from the intricate system of umbilicals and piping that snakes up the launch tower, providing essential connections between the rocket and the ground support equipment, to the realistic boosters on the rocket.

As a space enthusiast, I especially loved the detailed pipework and the clever use of parts to make the crew gantry for loading people into the rocket.

Overall, the design is spot on, capturing the essence of the Artemis launch system very accurately.

Verdict: A Mixed Bag for Space Enthusiasts

The LEGO® NASA Artemis is a mixed bag. While the final model is impressive, the building process can be a bit of a slog. The repetitive nature of the launch tower construction and the reliance on stickers detract from the overall experience. However, if you're patient and a fan of space exploration, the finished product is a rewarding display piece.

The set is incredibly accurate to the real Artemis launch system. The designers have captured all the important details, from the massive launch tower to the powerful solid rocket boosters.

You have to say it's great value for money with 3,601 (mainly small) pieces, you're getting a lot of LEGO® for your buck.

It’s a moderate challenge.

The repetitive nature of the launch tower construction can be a bit tedious, but the smaller details and the rocket itself require focus and attention and are very rewarding, as a result.

The fun factor is a bit mixed. The finished model is visually stunning, the base pad and the rocket are very enjoyable builds, but the tower can be a drain!

Pros Cons
Impressive and detailed final model Tedious and repetitive launch tower build
Intriguing launch tower mechanisms Overuse of stickers instead of printed pieces
Sturdy rocket construction Rocket construction doesn't start until later in the build
Informative instruction manual with Artemis program details

Recommendations and Final Thoughts

If you're a die-hard space enthusiast with a passion for LEGO®, the NASA Artemis Space Launch System is a must for you. The finished model is a stunning representation of humanity's return to the moon. However, be prepared for a somewhat repetitive build and the challenge of applying stickers.

For those seeking a more engaging and varied building experience, consider exploring other LEGO® space sets like the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery or the NASA Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle - LRV.

We hope this review helps you decide if the LEGO® NASA Artemis Space Launch System is the right set for your collection.
